Chapter Thirty-Five
Raphael points his gun down at my face, “I applaud you for escaping. People usually don’t have the balls to do that.”
I quickly throw my hands in front of the muzzle, shielding my face, “Wait, no, don’t.”
“You’re scared to die, aren’t you?”
“Please, there’s gotta be some sort of arrangement that we can make, right?”
He glances over at Simon and Chloe. He motions to the dead thugs collapsed in pools of their own blood, “An arrangement?”
“Yes, an arrangement,” I nod frantically, carefully reaching into my back pocket. “Please, anything but killing us.”
Raphael tilts his head to the side, “I tell ya what, Jason, I’ll kill you first and make it quick.”
I wrap my fingertips around the handle of my gun, “Or . . .”
“Or?”
I pull the gun out of my pocket, aim it up at his face, then pull the trigger.
Click.
My eyes go wide . . . the gun is jammed. I don’t know how; it won’t fire.
I pull the trigger again, and again.
Nothing.
Raphael laughs before slamming his foot down onto my left hand, bending over, and ripping the pistol out of my hand, “Man, you’re pathetic,” he stops crushing my hand and tosses the gun into the snow behind him. “Now, where was I?”
He grabs me by the hood and hoists me up to my feet before shoving me up against a brick wall. He bashes his palm into my face before head-butting me and violently slamming the back of my head against the solid, unforgiving foundation.
I feel like I’m about to black out. Shockingly, Chloe rushes up from behind and jabs her knife into his shoulder, then into the side of his neck.
Blood squirts from his throat, and I watch with a slack jaw as he falls to the ground, gasping and clutching his neck with both hands.
“C’mon!” Chloe demands while rushing over to Zeke’s dead body and picking up the box of uniforms. “We need to go now!”
I stare down at Raphael, almost in a trance. He’s reaches into his pocket and pulls a syringe out, stabbing it into his gut. He then injects himself with whatever liquid is inside before taking one last gulp of air. Dead.
Simon grabs me by the arm and pulls me along with him and Chloe out of the alley. A few minutes later, we make it to our car. I feel sick to my stomach.
“Did all that really just happen?” I ask as Chloe begins hot wiring the car.
She’s frantic, “Yes, now shut up, and let me concentrate.”
I lean my head against the headrest and take a deep breath, my nose throbbing, my head pounding, my hands trembling, “Sorry.”
She gets the car started, and we take off.
